According to a new annual forecast from the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), electricity demand in Ontario is anticipated to grow 75 per cent by 2050, higher than previously forecast, with annual consumption rising from 151 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025 to 263 TWh in 2050. ICYMI here.
The IESO had already projected the need for 11 TWh of Offshore Wind to meet their prior 2022 report on pathways to decarbonization which also includes 30 TWh of electricity imports from Quebec reducing our economic security.
This recent report increases the demand outlook by 15% and makes far-offshore wind an even more compelling opportunity given the limits of the technologies already being maximized, fuel price volatility, risks and emissions.
